Harwich Submarines in the Great War

The first submarine campaign of the Royal Navy in 1914

Published by Helion & Company, September 2021

This book tells the story of the key role played by the Harwich Submarine Flotilla in establishing British dominance in the North Sea at the beginning of the First World War.

Letters, diaries, memoirs, contemporary photographs and combat reports are used to give a complete account of every patrol in this ground breaking campaign. The story is told through the eyes of the participants on both sides, with information from British, German and French archival records used to reveal what really happened.

The text is supported by 50 charts and illustrations prepared especially for the book, many based on the track charts and logs of the submarines themselves. The text is also supported by 37 in-line photographs of ships and crew. Much of the content is in print for the first time. The foreword has been written by Rear Admiral Jonathan Westbrook CBE, former Royal Navy Submariner.

Nominated for the Maritime Foundation’s 2022 Mountbatten Award for Best Book.

‘Harris’s research is little short of astonishing… [He] describes meticulously the people, doctrine, and training of the submarine force… He has illustrated the book with a number of excellent photographs and his own very good charts.’ – Naval Historical Foundation

‘This book is a history of the British Submarine Service cutting its operational teeth in war, in the most formidably demanding of environments… in this the flotilla was very much the (frequently unacknowledged) spearhead of the British blockade of Germany.’ – The Mariner’s Mirror, Journal of the Society for Nautical Research

‘This is a book which will inform anyone interested in Great War submarine operations and the influences in the very beginnings of the British submariners’ ethos.’ – The Naval Review

‘Harwich Submarines … is well illustrated with sharp clear photos and excellent maps. It is recommended.’ – Over the Front Magazine
